Atlanta's East Lake Park team arrived at our site at 10AM. Thinking the building of a fence would involve some serious manual labor, I came bearing Flying Biscuits and plenty of coffee. The coffee run resulted in a large quantity of half and half spilling on the floor board of my car. This, I knew, would be unpleasant later, but I had no time to attend to it then. I took the floor mat out to dry in the sun and hoped for the best. What really mattered to me was, when we got started, it was not raining. Yet.
We gathered together in a lovely area of benches and arbors that had been constructed by another group of volunteers 3 years prior. There, we fueled ourselves with carbohydrates and caffeine while our volunteer coordinators, Doug and Erin, explained to us what we'd be doing that day. Our mission presented, we headed for the fence timbers.

While some of us got the fence started, those of us whose services (concrete mixing and pouring) were not immediately required set to work mulching the areas all around the playground that were looking the worse for wear. We were so industrious, in fact, that before lunch, we'd finished the portion of fence Doug and Erin thought it would take us all day to do. We returned to the wood pile to lay out the pieces for the remainder of the fence.

All that effort made us hungry. When I called the nice lady at MoJo pizza and asked her opinion regarding how much pizza we would need, she sounded kind of shocked when I upped it by an entire pizza. "We're building a fence here!" I reiterated. Sure enough, we ate all that pizza. And then we built the rest of that fence. In the pouring rain.
I learned something about Engle Martin folks that day - we are hardcore. Oh, and also, I learned that half and half is nearly impossible to get out of carpet. Currently, it still really stinks in my car.
Here we all are again, a little on the damp side - (L-R, again): Lynnice, Arnetra, Jackie, Brent, Lisa, Linda (trying to hide), Joel, Ravi, Joan and Quatis.

This was sent from Doug to the East Lake Neighbors association and our local council woman:
A huge thanks to our neighbor Lisa Provost and her co workers at Engle Martin. Her company does a national volunteer service day, and Lisa convinced her associates to reach out to support East Lake!
Yesterday, Lisa, with about 12 of her co-workers and our Parks Chair Erin Drury, worked to build a split rail fence along Memorial Drive between the Tennis Courts and Basketball court, and on toward Daniel Street. This fence will provide a buffer to prevent kids from easily running from the playground to the state highway, and is nice looking to boot!
Lisa and her gang were real troopers, and completed the fence despite the steady rain we had in the afternoon!
YAY LISA and Engle Martin!
