A word from Dawn about Fields Chapel cemetery

Fields Chapel Methodist Church was built in 1898, and was a thriving church at that time, with membership throughout the north Cherokee Canton area.

Around 1949, Allatoona Lake was created, and the road that led so many of the parishioners to this church was now part of the lake. Three cemeteries, which are now under Lake Allatoona, were disinterred and placed in Fields Chapel (approximately 19 gravesites).

Once the lake was completed, membership for the church fell greatly, as the main road to the church was destroyed in the construction of the lake. Members at that time had no easy access to the church. However, in recent years the church has grown again, and is enjoying a resurgence in membership.

The work being performed on our Labor Day in May will be greatly appreciated by the church family. Even though the cemetery hasn’t had a lot of work done in recent years, it is in remarkably good condition. The main emphasis will be placed on pruning, weeding, and raking. Cleaning of headstones is possible, as well as spraying weed killer and fertilizer on the lawn. Your help is so welcomed, and you will feel so good for all the efforts you put into it.

When I consider what it must have been like to have to move those gravesites, weeding and pruning seems like incredibly EASY work!

I actually have the original bid from the Army Corp of Engineers...the work was so extensive, because the instructions were "very" detailed on how and when the graves were to be moved. Interesting reading...
